Java Café – Whitby, North Yorkshire

Great spot for people-watching in Whitby. If you want a cuppa during one of the Goth Weekends, this is the place to be to watch what’s going on outside!

The review of this coffee shop in Whitby appears in our new book on tea and coffee in North Yorkshire. It’s out now, so buy a copy here…

Nice cup of coffee in a great spot for watching the people of Whitby go by. They use Eros Coffee, a fair-trade coffee blend that gives you a pretty smooth cappuccino. Not all cakes are baked in-house, so it’s worth asking if that matters to you. I chose the home-baked cheesecake, made by manager Lacey. If her other cakes are as good as this, it’s worth checking each day (apparently the carrot cake is a popular choice too, but that had all gone by the time we pitched up).

Getting there

The most romantic way to Whitby is on the North York Moors steam railway from Pickering. But there are more conventional trains, too, direct from Middlesbrough – it’s a scenic route, but it takes a while. Mind you, if you arrive at the train station, Java Cafe is only a short walk away. By road, Whitby is 20 miles north of Scarborough.
