Esther C – rebranded to Frothers Espresso- coffee shop in Merewether, NSW

Surely the best coffee in Merewether. The guys at Esther C are friendly, knowledgeable, local and best of all serve up superb coffee.

The review of this coffee shop in Merewether, NSW is designed to fit in with our current tour of New South Wales outdoor swimming pools and this coffee shop was great for a post swim coffee after a dip in the ocean baths in Merewether near Newcastle, NSW. There’s no book planned for now but a new website So for now take a look at our earlier books…

Crossing Paths, Crossing Borders

This 2016 publication recounts our journey from Yorkshire to Australia via 25 countries. It includes an annex with our 100 top tips for coffee or tea on the road, including this venue.

Read the full description of this book on the books page and if you like what you see you can buy it from there too..

There were three different roaster’s coffee on offer the day we dropped by Esther C, with Reuben Hills in their espresso machine, some from Seven Seeds in Melbourne and a local roaster called Unison, though this was only available in filter coffee. I would always choose the local roaster if given the choice, but the Reuben Hills blend for their flat whites was actually so good we stayed for a second cup. Really friendly vibe here too.

I loved the neighbourly feel to this coffee shop, with kids getting their induction into the coffee scene with babycinnos, and a nice combination of people sitting out on the benches in front of the coffee shop and others inside by the bar. Nice cakes to nibble on, too, and not too much of the feeling Saturday morning meant slap-up breakfast Aussie-style. These guys were just happy to have people in who appreciated the quality of their coffee.

Getting there

It’s a bit over a mile from the Ocean Baths at Merewether to Esther C and that’s a bit further than I usually go for my post swim coffee, but sometimes it’s worth going the extra mile for good coffee. There are local buses going past the coffee shop regularly but we didn’t check the timetables this time.
