Great little neighbourhood coffee shop in Balmain. Excellent coffee roasted on-site and amazing use of space in this tiny corner shop with the smallest terrace ever out the back.
The review of this coffee shop in Balmain is designed to fit in with our current tour of New South Wales outdoor swimming pools and this coffee shop was great for a post swim coffee after a dip in Dawn Fraser Baths. There’s no book planned for now but a new website http://oceanpoolsnsw.net.au. So for now take a look at our earlier books…
This 2016 publication recounts our journey from Yorkshire to Australia via 25 countries. It includes an annex with our 100 top tips for coffee or tea on the road, including this venue.
Steve, the owner-barista who runs Hungry Bull, used his Turkish connections to get the beautiful little coffee roaster that sits in the front of this coffee shop in Balmain’s main shopping street. He’s originally from Turkey himself, and if you’re a football fan like me, he’ll regale you with stories of his playing career which saw him playing at the highest level in Turkey before emigrating to Australia quite a few years ago…
Oh, and he’ll do you a Turkish coffee, too, if you ask, though probably not with the coffee heated on glowing coals as we remembered from our shared memories of coffee in Turkey.
This is the archetypal small batch roaster, and he clearly knows his stuff because this was the best coffee I’d drunk in quite a while: smooth with a nutty and fruity flavour. I ended up having coffee before and after my swim, though you could also talk to Steve about what you should and shouldn’t consume before and after exercise.
A great array of cakes on offer, too. I went for a passion fruit muffin AFTER my swim. And with the cosy inside space full, I picked one of the seats out the back on the tiny terrace to enjoy surely the best coffee in Balmain.

I caught the bus from Sydney CBD near Queen Victoria Building, but there are lots of bus routes that criss cross Balmain and in particular Darling Street. Some even drop you off right by the coffee shop. From Dawn Fraser Baths, Hungry Bull Co is a short uphill walk through Elkington Park and back to the main Balmain shopping street.
